Beyond the Boundary: the Occupying of Space

A Practice in the Realm of Everyday Life

2015

'Beyond the Boundary' is a site-specific installation, concentrating on materiality and performativity which engages the space. As a series of spatial installation, I created a number of spatial thresholds through reversible materials that engages everyday performance in various public space.

This practice responds to a sense that a 'boundary' is blurred through domestic body movement into public space in Korea. The work intends to encourage a contemporary re-thinking of the meaning of 'spatial occupation' for us now, exploring ways in which a temporal space is constantly created and re-created in cities.

This performative spatial practice emphasises the issue of temporary boundary defined by body movement. It focuses on spatial extension of domestic space into public realm in a way of defining spatial boundary. Considering the use of dot-jari, this practice emphasises a socially significant issue of cleanliness, generating the ritual act of 'removing shoes' and materiality.

Cleaning

My performance of the everyday constitutes various domestic activities such as cleaning, sleeping and eating as a repetition of the ordinary. In particular, 'cleaning' is significant in that it represents a way of defining space between the interior and exterior sphere through a spatial demarcation - the removal of dirt as an ac of erasure.
