Spatial Extension

An Exploration of Bodily-Memorised Habit

2016

'Spatial Extension' is a performative installation in conjunction with Fran Cottell and Marianne Mueller as part of Pentagon Petal. In this work, there are two performances; by my body and other participated performers (Koreans). This work shows how the spatial boundary, particularly within the public realm is defined and constructed by socially embedded habit, inscribed upon the body in relation to the issues of cleanliness and materiality.

In the performance of this work, various materials such as newspaper and plastic bags were used, the Korean participants created spaces and demarcated a boundary between the body and the ground.

Through this understanding of a bodily habit created spatial typology, I transform public space into a domestic realm in relation to activities or 'actions' such as cleaning and removing shoes, demonstrating how social experience forms the spatial.
